Oral health care does not stop at the dental office every 6 months after a routine prophylaxis (cleaning). It is really a team effort between the patient, hygienist and the dentist. The importance of preventative care is to reduce the risks of caries and periodontal disease which have been linked to heart disease.

Dental Caries and Periodontal Disease

Dental caries is the technical term to describe tooth decay or cavities that is caused by bacteria. Tooth decay destroys the tooth enamel and sometimes the dentin which eventually leads to fillings, crowns and sometimes root canals depending on the severity. Periodontal disease has many stages and begins as gingivitis. When someone has periodontal disease their gums swell, which is the body’s response to the presence of bacteria, the red swollen gums often bleed and can cause some discomfort. In more advanced stages one experiences bone loss in the jaw making it possible for more serious infection or even tooth loss.

Here is a quick reminder of the basic dental treatment one should maintain at home

  1. Brush teeth at least twice a day with fluoride containing toothpaste. Fluoride is a mineral found in most mouth washes and toothpastes to reduce dental caries.
  2. Flossing regularly greatly reduces dental caries. It is a preventative measure to keep gums and teeth healthy by removing the food particles that get stuck in those hard to reach placeseven whilst brushing, thus keeping your teeth and mouth fresh and clean as possible.
  3. Making healthy choices about the food one consumes; especially foods that are low in sugar is ideal. Of course that doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy a soda or sweets, but if you do, remember to drink some water after to rinse or brush your teeth as soon as you can.
  4. Keeping your 6 month check-up appointment with your dentist is essential in keeping your teeth healthy and strong.
