Dental Implant Procedure

Dental Implants in Arcadia

Understandably, someone who loses one or more teeth will want to replace them as quickly as possible. Most often, dental implants provide the most suitable solution because they can restore your smile to a confident and functional one. Many patients are hesitant to undergo the dental implant procedure because they don’t know what to expect before, during, or post-surgery. At OF Dental, you’ll be in excellent hands through every stage of the surgical process. Dr. Farahmand, the go-to implant dentist in Arcadia, will assess your specific case and work with you to choose a dental implant treatment that’s right for you.

Before Treatment

Dental implant surgery requires extensive planning to yield successful results. You’ll need to consult with your dentist about 9-12 months prior to receiving surgery to make sure you qualify as a candidate. Additionally, your dentist will need to take X-rays, 3-D CT scans, and/or impressions to correctly prepare your implant. In some cases, tooth extractions are necessary, which is why preemptive planning is encouraged for the dental implant procedure.

During the Surgery

Sturdy titanium posts are anchored directly into the jawbone, providing a completely functional artificial root to anchor the new artificial tooth or crown. The bone grows around the implanted post the same way bone grows around the natural root of a tooth.

During the procedure, you shouldn’t feel any pain at all. However, you may feel vibrations from the drill and a bit of pressure in the mouth. After the local anesthetic has worn off, you may feel discomfort in the mouth, but you shouldn’t be in excruciating pain.

Post-Surgery Recovery

Expect some oozing and swelling in the mouth within the first 48 hours after surgery. You’ll also recommend avoiding strenuous activity for the first 48 hours post-operation. Most patients say pain begins to diminish around day 3-4 after surgery and that normal eating habits can be resumed after the first week. Be sure to follow up with your dentist in Arcadia and follow all post-surgical instructions carefully.
