ways to improve your dental hygiene

By now, you’ve probably heard most dental advice before. Brush twice a day, floss, don’t eat sugary foods…and so on! But what else is there to consider? Are there any other things you could be doing to improve your dental hygiene? In this article, we discuss 3 lesser known methods for making your teeth and gums as healthy as possible.

  1. An apple a day

You might have heard the famous expression “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” But who would have thought that it also applies to your dentist? Apples help to cleanse your teeth and gums as well as providing healthy vitamins that promote general health. Of course, apples are not a replacement for brushing, but they go a long way to boosting your dental hygiene. Eat them and eat them regularly!

  2. Chase Soda with Water

So you already know that sodas are bad for your teeth, but you still love to drink them. In this case, you should follow up the soda drink with a glass of water immediately afterwards. This helps to dilute the acidic effect of the soda on your teeth. Again, this is not optimal (the sugar is unhealthy and still increases the cavity risk) but it is better to know this information if you are a soda junkie.

  3. Don’t Overbrush

Too much of a good thing can be…well, bad. While it’s important that you brush regularly and thoroughly, you also need to watch out for over-brushing. This is a more common problem than you might expect. Brushing your teeth too vigorously can strip them of their enamel and irritate the gums. Plaque is a soft substance that can be removed by brushing relatively gently, so don’t brush too hard!
